How to be Successful …At Anything

I wish to present this piece of idea from Kyle of Wealthy Affiliate which I have enjoyed and believe that it might help to encourage someone who is on the way to success. It can be applied to any venture in life. Wealthy Affiliate is an online business training platform. This write up is based on his perspective as a genuine online coach for over 11 years. Enjoy it.

People say this all the time.

“I want success now. I want to earn $500 in the next 30 days!

However, one thing that I rarely hear in the online world by newcomers and even some folks that think they are seasoned marketers is…

“I want to become great at _________”.

People want the money, but what they don’t understand that in order to achieve success you need to become great at something. In fact, just one thing. It can be anything.

You could become an expert at the “hula hoop” and be very successful, or in the case of what we are talking about, you could become great at ONE thing online and be very, very successful.

how to be successful at anything

I guess that leaves the question, how do you become great at something?

Before I answer the question, I want to give you a few examples of experts.

Michael Jordan.

Richard Branson.

Bobby Fisher.

What do you think these people did to become an expert? What was one common thing that ALL of them did to get to their level of expertise and their greatness?

Got an answer?

Here it goes…

PRACTICE!

Yeah, that is it. To become great at something, you practice that one thing…regardless of what it is. You practice until you go blue in the face. Yeah, might seem a little crazy but when you enjoy what you are doing (back to that “passion” thing again), it doesn’t feel like an arduous task to become good at it.

Michael Jordan practised to the point where hitting a shot did not take thought, it was second nature. This allowed him to think and see other things that he wouldn’t have seen if he had not developed this expertise.

Richard Branson practised business and become very good at it in creating his Virgin brand. He became an expert not overnight, but through years and years of tireless practice until his decision making on the “right” decisions in business became second nature.

Bobby Fisher became the most prolific chess player through his expertise in making the right moves. Was he psychic? No, he developed an innate ability to predict the other players moves because he had “seen it all” through practice.

In fact, in Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Outliers, he explains that the “elite performers” all had something in common, regardless of their trade. An expert violinist or an expert journalist all had either put 10 years or 10,000 hours into something to achieve greatness.

Here is a popular quote from the book:secret of success

““The emerging picture from such studies is that ten thousand hours of practice is required to achieve the level of mastery associated with being a world-class expert—in anything,” writes the neurologist Daniel Levitin.”

Really, when it comes down to it, ANYONE can be great at ANYTHING. If this doesn’t excite you, I know what will.

Becoming an expert online means a big business. This year marks my 11th year within the online world. I have lived and breathed Internet Business for the last 11 years. Am I an expert?

Probably at some things, definitely not even close to everything. In fact, I know a fraction of what there is to know online and that is fine with me. You only have to be great at ONE thing to achieve great success.

Remember that the next time you tell yourself you can’t be good at this. Remember that the next time you attempt to try to become great a bunch of different things.

Yes, maybe we will not all be able to play basketball like Michael Jordan and maybe we will not all be the next artist with the skills of a Picasso, but I can assure you we can get pretty damn close.

Your path to expertise starts here, it starts today. Focus on doing ONE thing great. You will surprise yourself and it will be much quicker than the 10 years before people start calling you an expert.

Before you become great, you must become good. Good can take you a long way in business as well!

What facet of the Internet are you going to carve out as you place to become an “expert”?…Kyle

    • Sure Dave, it is a great motivation and inspiration for any worthwhile venture . Kyle is a unique trainer that uses simple and effective approach to pass on technical and complex topics. He is the best so far. Thanks for your contribution.

  2. Hi Joseph,

I think everything happens at the right time in life for everybody. The secret is to recognize that and embrace it with both hands. I’ve been studying blogging and writing articles, and even doing the website comments in a very obessive manner the past few days, since I’ve started ±3 weeks ago. I’ve even changed my schedule to night shift to benefit from faster internet response times during the lock down period in our country. I, like most other, also want to “earn money fast”, however, you’ve just brought my me back to my senses again.

Sometimes I’m getting a bit discouraged, putting in a lot of time, and having nothing to show for it, but if I must be REALLY honest with myself, I’ve learnt QUITE A LOT during these past few days. I’ve actually got a long list of things that I’ve learnt, and everything doesn’t happen overnight

Thank you, you’ve made me realize that I should celebrate the small victories and ultimately not be so hard on myself.

    • Hi Andre, thanks for your contribution. You are very correct. Nothing good that endures comes so easy without persistence. It is natural to feel weak sometimes as we journey along but articles like this reminds us that we need to keep practising. Always celebrate your small victories along the journey. Cheers.

  3. Helooo I want to say a big thanks to you for putting up this insightful and amazing article on how to succeed at anything, being successful is one basic challenge so many faces. I have actually learnt a lot  from this article, practice indeed makes perfect and like you’ve also mentioned  practice comes in form of training and also carrying out the required exercises, following a mentor, focusing on the process each step at a time and burning your bridge of retreat. Following a mentor is one thing I have really been lacking, I really think there’s a need of following a mentor I will make the necessary amendments .

    Thanks for sharing this.

    • Hi Sheddy, I am grateful for your contribution. It is very correct that Practice makes Perfect. It is article like this that help us to carry out self evaluation on areas we are lacking and make improvement. Success is a journey, and every stage is part of the journey and it is good we enjoy the trip as we move along. Thanks so much. Cheers

  4. Hey nice article you have there. Success comes with a great task, so many wants to become successful, but fail to realise that in the journey of success they are bound to be obstacles, distraction from goals. The ability for one to be persistent towards his goal of becoming a success and when it outsmart the challenges that comes with success, only then will success be achieved.

    • Thanks Edahnewton1. Persistence is a very key ingredient that help us to keep practicing and pushing towards our goals. What I have personally learnt is to celebrate my small victories along the way at each step. Each step is a success! Please help share with friends. Cheers.
